Everything the Quran teaches about Jesus
Below is a complete inventory of the Quranic material on Jesus (ʿĪsā). Two things are worth stating up front, because they shape the list:
- He is named ʿĪsā 25 times, plus 11 uses of al-Masīḥ (Messiah) and many references by epithet ( Ibn Maryam, “a word from Him,” “a spirit from Him,” “the son of Mary”). Total verses touching him: roughly sixty — the largest cluster of any figure after Moses and Abraham, and the only non-Muhammad figure with a full nativity narrative.
- The Quran records remarkably little Jesus teaching. There is no Sermon on the Mount, no parables, no Lord’s Prayer, no ethical maxims. What exists is almost entirely kerygmatic: identity claims, miracle claims, and calls to worship. Section 5 lists every one of them, completely.
1. Annunciation, conception, birth, infancy
3:45 — “When the angels said: O Mary, Allah gives you good tidings of a Word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and among those brought near.”
3:46 — “He will speak to the people from the cradle and in maturity, and he will be of the righteous.”
3:47 — Mary’s objection; “Thus Allah creates what He wills.”
19:16–21 — Mary withdraws eastward, the spirit appears to her in the form of a well-proportioned man, announces “a pure boy,” the conception.
Note: This story is false. Mary never “withdrew to the east”. This detail is taken from the Protoevangelium of James (mid-2nd century).
19:22–26 — she conceives, withdraws to a remote place, the palm tree, the spring, the command not to grieve.
Note: This story is false. It is inspired by Pseudo-Matthew ch. 20, the Arabic Infancy Gospel ch. 4 (which depends on Pseudo-Matthew), and the Armenian Infancy Gospel.
19:27–33 — she returns with the infant; the people’s accusation; the cradle speech (quoted in full in §5).
Note: That Mary was accused by people can not be supported. It is a common Jewish polemic that the author of the Quran accepted as true.
21:91 — “And she who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her of Our Spirit, and made her and her son a sign for the worlds.”
23:50 — “And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and gave them refuge on a height, a place of rest and a flowing spring.”
66:12 — “And Mary, daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into it of Our Spirit; and she believed in the words of her Lord and His books, and was among the devoutly obedient.”
Note: Mary was not the daughter of Imran. The author of the Quran confuses her with Mariam, the daughter of Amram, the sister of Moses, who lived one and a half millenia earlier.
3:59 — “The example of Jesus with Allah is like the example of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him ‘Be’ — and he was.”
19:34–35 — “That is Jesus, the word of truth about which they dispute. It is not for Allah to take a son…”
2. Titles, epithets, and status descriptions
- al-Masīḥ (Messiah) — 3:45; 4:157; 4:171 (×2); 4:172; 5:17 (×2); 5:72 (×2); 5:75; 9:30; 9:31
- Ibn Maryam (son of Mary) — 2:87; 2:253; 3:45; 4:157; 4:171; 5:17; 5:46; 5:72; 5:75; 5:78; 5:110; 5:112; 5:114; 5:116; 19:34; 23:50; 33:7; 43:57; 57:27; 61:6; 61:14
- “a Word from Him” / “His word which He bestowed on Mary” — 3:45; 4:171
- “a spirit from Him” — 4:171; cf. 21:91; 66:12
- “honored in this world and the Hereafter, among those brought near” — 3:45
- “a servant” (ʿabd) — 4:172; 19:30; 43:59
- “a prophet” (nabī) — 19:30; 33:7
- “a messenger” (rasūl) — 3:49; 4:171; 5:75; 61:6
- “blessed” (mubārak) — 19:31
- “a sign” (āya) — 3:49; 19:21; 21:91; 23:50; 43:61
- “an example” (mathal) — 43:57, 59
- “the word of truth” — 19:34
- “confirmed by the Holy Spirit” — 2:87; 2:253; 5:110
Ironically, the Quran calling Jesus The Word of Truth/Word of God is an admission that Jesus is divine. He is not just beinging a word, he is THE Word. The Word of God is an intrinsic attribute of God. Muslims believe it manifested as the Quran; Christians believe it manifested as Jesus. But it is divine.
3. Prophethood, scripture, covenant
2:87 — “We gave Moses the Book and followed him with messengers; and We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit.”
2:253 — same, in the context of messengers preferred over one another.
3:48 — “And He will teach him the Book and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel.”
4:163 — “We revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him; and We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.”
5:46 — “And We sent Jesus son of Mary following in their footsteps, confirming what was before him of the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, containing guidance and light, confirming what was before it of the Torah, and a guidance and admonition for the God-fearing.”
5:78 — “Those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel were cursed by the tongue of David and of Jesus son of Mary.”
33:7 — “When We took from the prophets their covenant — and from you, and from Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus son of Mary — and We took from them a solemn covenant.”
42:13 — “He has ordained for you the religion He enjoined on Noah, and what We revealed to you, and what We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus.”
57:27 — “Then We sent Our messengers in their footsteps, and We sent Jesus son of Mary and gave him the Gospel; and We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy, and monasticism which they innovated…”
61:6 — “When Jesus son of Mary said: O Children of Israel, I am the messenger of Allah to you, confirming what was before me of the Torah and giving good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.”
4. Miracles
3:49 — “I create for you from clay the form of a bird, then breathe into it and it becomes a bird by Allah’s permission; and I heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead to life by Allah’s permission; and I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses.”
Note: The story about Jesus making clay birds is false and comes from the second century Infancy Gospel of Thomas, chapter 2. Ironically, the story itself shows Jesus doing something only God does: Create new life out of clay by blowing his spirit into it, which would prove that Jesus is God.
5:110 — the longest Jesus verse: “O Jesus son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother, when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit so you spoke to people in the cradle and in maturity; and when I taught you the Book and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you made from clay the form of a bird by My permission and breathed into it and it became a bird by My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper by My permission; and you brought forth the dead by My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear proofs…”
5:112–115 — the table (māʾida) from heaven; Jesus’ prayer at 5:114 (quoted in §5).
19:29–30 — speech from the cradle.
5. Every teaching attributed to Jesus
This is the complete set of Jesus’ direct speech in the Quran. Nothing else exists.
19:30–33 (cradle speech):
“Indeed I am a servant of Allah. He has given me the Book and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am, and enjoined on me prayer and charity as long as I live, and dutifulness to my mother; and He has not made me insolent or wretched. And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.”
3:49–51:
“Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I create for you from clay the form of a bird, then breathe into it and it becomes a bird by Allah’s permission. And I heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead to life by Allah’s permission. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers. And confirming what was before me of the Torah, and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. And I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allah and obey me. Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him; this is a straight path.”
Note: Stopen from the 2nd century infancy gospel of Thomas (apocrypal). But it shows that Jesus creates life out of nothing, can raise the dead, heals the sick, is omniscient - all attributes only God can possess.
3:52 — “Who will be my helpers to Allah?”
5:72 — “O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.”
5:114 — “O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table from heaven, to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us, and a sign from You; and provide for us, for You are the best of providers.”
5:116–117 — at the judgment: “O Allah, if I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is in my soul, and I do not know what is in Your soul. Indeed You are the Knower of the unseen. I did not say to them except what You commanded me: worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I was among them; then when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are witness over all things.”
Note: This theology teaching is false. The Quran claims Jesus don’t know God. Jesus however said “no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to disclose him”.
19:36 — “Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him; this is a straight path.”
43:63–64 — “I have come to you with wisdom, and to make clear to you some of that about which you differ. So fear Allah and obey me. Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him; this is a straight path.”
61:6 — “O Children of Israel, I am the messenger of Allah to you, confirming what was before me of the Torah and giving good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.”
61:14 — “Who will be my helpers to Allah?”
Recurring formulas: “fear Allah and obey me” (3:50; 43:63); “Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him; this is a straight path” (3:51; 19:36; 43:64); “I have come to you with…” (3:49; 43:63; 61:6).
6. Doctrinal correction — what Christians say about him
4:171 — “O People of the Book, do not exceed the limits in your religion and say nothing about Allah but the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say ‘three.’ … Allah is only one God; far be it from Him to have a son.”
Note: This verse is means as anti-trinitarian polemic, but manages the opposite. It fails to articulate the trinity doctrine, describing it as tritheism. And instead it affirms that Jesus is the Word of Allah wand a spirit from him, which means that Jesus is divine.
4:172 — “The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of Allah, nor do the angels brought near.”
5:17 — “They have disbelieved who say Allah is the Messiah son of Mary. Say: who then has any power over Allah, if He willed to destroy the Messiah son of Mary, and his mother, and all who are on earth?”
5:72–75 — “They have disbelieved who say Allah is the Messiah son of Mary… They have disbelieved who say Allah is the third of three… The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger; messengers have passed before him, and his mother was a truthful woman; both ate food.”
Note: This verse fails to describe the trinity doctrine, instead describing tritheism. This proves that it does not come from Allah, because how could Allah not know what Christians believe?
9:30–31 — “The Christians say the Messiah is the son of Allah… They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah and the Messiah son of Mary — though they were commanded to worship only one God.”
Grammatical note: The complaint is that they took scholars and monks as lords beside Allah and Jesus - admitting the lordship of Jesus. Had it means taking Jesus as Lord beside Allah, then Jesus would be grouped with the monks and scholars.
5:116 — “And when Allah says: O Jesus son of Mary, did you say to people: take me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?”
Note: The author of the Quran again fails to describe the trinity, thinking that Mary is a part of it, and that it’s tritheism - three gods. This only shows that the Quran is not from Allah, for how could Allah not know such basics?
19:35–36 — “It is not for Allah to take a son. Glory be to Him!”
7. Crucifixion, death, raising
3:55 — “When Allah said: O Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself, and purify you from those who disbelieve, and set those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection.”
4:157–158 — “And their saying: we killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the messenger of Allah. They did not kill him and did not crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them. And those who differ about it are in doubt concerning it; they have no knowledge except the following of conjecture, and they did not kill him for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself, and Allah is mighty and wise.”
Note: This verse is of course historically false. But if it was true, it only means that Allah lied to his followers for hundreds of years.
4:159 — “And there is none of the People of the Book but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.”
19:33 — “And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.”
Note: This verse literally admits the death and resurrection of Jesus, contradicting 4:157.
8. Eschatology and the Children of Israel
43:57–59 — “When the son of Mary is presented as an example, your people turn away from it… He was nothing but a servant whom We favored, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.”
43:61 — “And indeed he is knowledge of the Hour, so do not doubt it, and follow me; this is a straight path.”
43:65 — “But the factions differed among themselves; so woe to those who disbelieved from the punishment of a painful Day.”
5:110 (closing) — “and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear proofs, and those who disbelieved among them said: this is nothing but manifest magic.”
3:52–53 — the disciples: “We are the helpers of Allah; we believe in Allah, and bear witness that we are submitted. Our Lord, we believe in what You revealed and we follow the messenger, so record us among the witnesses.”
5:111 — “When I inspired the disciples: believe in Me and My messenger.”
9. Jesus in the lists of prophets
2:136; 3:84; 4:163; 6:85; 33:7; 42:13; 57:27 — all place him within the chain: “Say: we believe in Allah and what was revealed to us, and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them” (2:136).
6:85 — “And Zachariah, John, Jesus and Elias — each was among the righteous.”
Observations
The distribution is lopsided in a way that is itself the point: roughly a third of the material is polemic against Christian doctrine (his divinity, the Trinity, the crucifixion), another third is miracle narrative, and the teaching proper occupies fewer than a dozen verses. His recorded speech is almost entirely about who he is and who sent him — “a servant,” “a messenger,” “worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” The Quran’s Jesus preaches almost nothing except his own subordinate status, and 5:116–117 extends that even to the eschaton, where he explicitly disclaims having taught the Trinity.
The one place a Gospel-like register appears is 19:30–33, and even there the content is cultic (prayer, alms, filial duty) rather than ethical.
